5 on Friday - Volume 13

1. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I was at the Arizona Biltmore last weekend on my first trip away from the kiddos.  Ryan had to go to Phoenix for work, so I selfishly invited myself and tagged along to have my own private mini-vacay, while he was busy with lawyer stuff.  I saw him for a grand total of about 25 minutes collectively from the time we got to the hotel on Thursday afternoon until we left on Sunday morning, so I can't really say that I was vacationing "with" my husband, but I was vacationing "close to" my husband (and that's good enough for me!).  Although it was not much of a vacation for him (womp, womp).  I, however, had a marvelous time lounging by the pool with a prickly pear margarita, dining on room service every night, watching movies in bed in my jammies, sleeping in, taking long naps and going to bed early every night (do you sense a theme here?).  It was really one of the most relaxing trips I've ever taken, as I had no where to go, nothing to do and no one to hang out with.  I even read a whole book! I really should vacation by myself more often.
2. Yesterday was my husband's birthday.  Happy birthday, Ryan!  He's old (and I'm even older).  I made him some cupcakes (which he didn't eat) (from a box) and got a baby-sitter so we could go out to a nice dinner (not from a box) and drink heavily. And then Mac cried and begged us not to leave him and we felt like really shitty asshole parents for going out.  We spent the whole night talking about the kids and then rushed home to see them, but they were already asleep so we just went to sleep too.  We are such losers.  For his birthday, I also got him a camper to go on the back of his pickup truck because we were getting a little too yuppy and needed a bit more redneck in our lives...ugh.

(Actually, I didn't even get him a camper...I wrote him a check and told him to go get his own damn redneck camper if that's what he really wanted.  I'm super romantic like that.)
3.  A few weeks ago I got this AMAZING box of fun products to try out as part of my role as a Product Scout for Savvy Sassy Moms.  Each product I received was awesome and deserves its own post, so next week I'll be posting all 5 reviews on the blog.  Consider yourself warned...Review Week will make you want to immediately go out and buy all this stuff.

4. I finally caved and jumped on the essential oils bandwagon.  I am seriously such a sucker for peer pressure.  No, I will not be using them to treat illnesses or replace actual medicines (because...science), but I have two dirty germy kids and a high medical deductible, so I figure it can't hurt.  While I have no clue how smelly oils are supposed to help with allergies or headaches or anything, I'm willing to give it a shot.  However, I still kinda believe this is all a bunch of hippie voodoo magic that you have to actually believe works for it to actually work and thus my skepticism will prevent the oils from working their hippie voodoo magic completely, making this a self-fulfilling prophecy that they won't work for us.  Things that make you go...hmmmm.  Anyway, I got a starter kit and a diffuser and have been filling my house with the smell of lavender, lemon and peppermint. They smell lovely, although I can barely stand the aromas without wanting peppermint ice cream or lemon cream pie or lavender sugar cookies or vodka lemonades.  I will probably be the only person in the history of essential oils to flunk out because they made me too hungry.
5. Yesterday Mac told me that he loved slugs, grasshoppers and rocks all the time and sometimes he loved me, just a little bit on Saturdays.  So there's that.  At least tomorrow is Saturday.

Mim's 8 Month Sitting Up Milestone Photo Session

A few weeks ago, my awesome lawyer-turned-scientist-turned-mama-turned-photographer friend Jessica of Emma Constance Photography took these amazing photos of Mim for her milestone "sitting up" mini session.  Mim is a total ham for the camera and cheesed it up, rocking her bubble dress and fancy gold kicks.  I couldn't be happier with how adorable they turned out - they capture her sweet and fun personality so well!  Jess even convinced me (and bribed Mac) to get in a few, which completely melt my heart.  I'm so crazy madly in love with them.

How am I ever going to choose a favorite?

Mac Goes Fly Fishing

If you know my husband (or have been reading this blog for any length of time), you know that Ryan is a fly fishing junkie.  He started fly fishing when he was a kid, fished all through college and law school and sneaks off multiple times a year to exotic locations to fish.  He will talk about fly fishing to anyone that will listen, offer to take you and teach you if you don't know how.  He even gave me waders for Christmas the first year we dated as an attempt to inaugurate me into his world.  He fly fished out East on our very first vacation together, in Hawaii on our post-bar celebration trip, on our wedding day in Jackson Hole, on our honeymoon in Belize and in Vail on our first anniversary trip. Needless to say, fly fishing is a significant part of who he is and has been a huge part of our relationship.
Ryan serves on the Board of Directors of Trout Unlimited's Gateway Chapter in St. Louis and this year they held a youth outing to teach kids how to fly fish.  Unlike regular (spinning rod) fishing, fly fishing requires a lot more skill and technique for casting, so it's not as easy for a little kid (or me) to get the hang of.  TU held the event at a place called Westover Farms, where the streams are small and stocked with trout.  Westover Farms has a super cute (although that's probably not the description they would use) section of small stream fishing, which is great for little ones because it allows the kids to fish from the shore without having to wade in the water.  The stream is full of catch and release rainbow trout, making it perfect for beginners.
Since the moment we found out we were having a boy, my husband has been dreaming of the day when he can take his son fly fishing for the first time.  In the last year, Mac has become quite a good little fisherman on a spinning rod.  He loves casting, watching his bobber, setting the hook and reeling in fish (whether real or imaginary...doesn't really matter to him).  The TU youth event was aimed at kids between the ages of 6-15, but Ryan was confident that Mac (at 2) was ready!  Ryan got Mac his very first fly rod and they began practice casting in the street in front of our house.  Mac did pretty well, but his attention span is about 35 seconds long, so it was iffy whether he'd be ready for an all-day fishing event, but Ryan again had faith in his progeny.  So, on the morning of the event, we packed up the kiddos and headed down the highway to Westover.
Most of the kids there were quite a bit older than Mac and I'm sure the other parents probably thought we were a little crazy to bring a preschooler (and a baby) to this event.  And actually, I was a little nervous myself, but Mac was so excited to be there with his daddy and fly fish for the first time.  It was adorable and I was thrilled to be there to capture the moment.  I strapped Mim on my back in the carrier and got my camera out and ready as the boys got their gear together and headed toward the stream.
Ryan got Mac set-up and ready and they began to fish.  Ryan is such a patient teacher when it comes to fishing.  He showed Mac where to cast and how to watch the indicator.  He put him in the right spot and pointed out the fish.  And then (because Mac's like me and insists on doing everything BY HIMSELF) he just let Mac go.  Mac would cast and watch as his line floated downstream.  Then he'd recast and watch, like he'd been fishing all his life.  And just like that, our little 2 year-old fishing prodigy caught and landed his very first rainbow trout on a fly rod!
The entire place erupted in applause for Mac as he alternated between reeling in his fish and jumping up and down with excitement.  Everyone was stunned that this tiny kid just caught his first fish!  Mac was innundated with whistles, clapping and high-fives from all the volunteers.  The look on his face was a combination of shock and amazement!  But that was nothing compared to the look of joy and pride on Ryan's face.

And with that, Mac was hooked.  He wanted more.  A lot more.  These two spent the rest of the day fishing with quite a bit of success.  Mim and I followed them around taking pictures and I was incredibly impressed with Mac's concentration, persistence and enthusiasm over the next 4 hours!  He is his dad's boy.
I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship...
And just to prove that Mim and I really were there.
She wore her fishing gear too.
Thanks so much to the Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Westover Farms for this great event.
