Fall With Kids - Activities, Adventures, Crafts & Recipes

Tomorrow's officially the first day of fall, so I'm jumping on the bandwagon with all kinds of fun fall adventures, activities, outings, crafts, recipes and ideas for kids this autumn.  I've been putting together a really fun Pinterest board called Fall With Kids that has links to tons of things to do with kids this fall, from baking all kinds of pumpkin-spiced goodies to organizing an outdoor movie night. I've got links to all kinds of fall-themed books for kids, nature walk activities, pumpkin-carving templates, fall photo shoot tips, apple recipes, leaf crafts and turkey day activities. I've  also been working on our fall bucket list, which I've included below.
What are some of your favorite fall activities with kids?

Mim's First Birthday Balloon Photo Shoot & Cake Smash

Since I posted Mac's 3-year photo shoot this week, I figured it would only be fair to post Mim's 1-year photo shoot too.  Once again, Kristie of L Photographie went above and beyond for this shoot! She spent hours filling her studio with 100 gorgeous gold helium balloons for Mim to play in.  You should have seen Mim's eyes light up when she saw all the balloons!  We did a couple photos of Mim in an adorable little dress with her bunny as she played in the balloons and then changed her into her cake smash outfit and let her go to town on the cake.  Girlfriend did not disappoint!  I was a little hesitant to do a cake smash photo shoot because I feel like it's way overdone, but I cannot get over the cuteness of these photos and I'm so glad Kristie convinced me to do this.  We sat there cracking up as we watched her destroy this cake.  She loved it and giggled the whole time and kept looking at me, like she was getting away with something she knew she shouldn't be doing.  Again, another messy child to clean up, but so worth it!

Cake Smash Outfit: One-sie and bow from Belle N Whistle, sequin shorts from Sugarplum Lane and moccasins from Freshly Picked

Is that not the cutest cake-face you've ever seen?!
Anyone else do a cake smash for your baby's first birthday?

Diggers & Dirt - Mac's 3-year Photos

I am so excited to share these photos with you today.  For Mac's 3-year photo shoot, I knew I wanted to do something a little bit different.  Like any typical 3-year old that constantly has a camera shoved in his face by his obnoxious mother, he despises getting his picture taken these days.  I wanted to come up with something that he could do to distract him and occupy his attention while my amazing photographer, Kristie of L Photographie, took his picture.  As anyone that has met him knows, he's really into dirt, digging and tractors.  Kristie spent two months scouring the area and found us the most amazing location for a photo shoot -- on-site at the Bobcat St. Louis backlot, surrounded by diggers, dump trucks, dirt piles and so much mud!

I knew we weren't going to get the cute happy smiling photos, but honestly, that's ok because that's not really Mac.  Mac is busy, active and wild.  Yes, he can also be goofy and silly, but he's a very strong-willed intense boy and I love that these photos really capture his personality.  They show how hard-working and determined he is.  They show his focus and moodiness and his love for the outdoors and dirt.  You can tell just by looking at these photos that he's curious, adventurous and all boy.  I love that we went a different route and found a way to make sure his personality shined through - 3 is a tough age, but it's so much fun.  I absolutely couldn't be any happier with the way these turned out!

First Day of Preschool

Well, we survived the official first day of preschool without any tears (from Mac or me) at dropoff.  Granted, that's not to say there was not a boatload of tears prior to leaving the house about any number of things, like: (1) what he was going to wear; (2) what to eat for breakfast; (3) what Mim was wearing; (4) whether or not he'd take photos, (5) whether Baby Sting (his favorite stuff animal stingray...out of the nine stuffed stingrays he has) could go to school with him; (6) what mommy was wearing; (7) what Mim ate; and (8) what time to leave to make sure we made it to school on time.  I'm pretty sure nuclear launches take less planning and negotiation than our first day of preschool took.
As I mentioned, we've been talking to Mac about going back to school for weeks now.  Like most toddlers, I really think that he does much better when he knows what to expect and knows what's coming.  Transitions and schedule changes can be hard for kids, so we've all been talking to him about going back to school and trying to get him excited about it.  For the most part, I really do think he was ready and excited to go back. He kept talking about his friends at school and all the fun stuff (like cutting with scissors! and talking about peanut tea!??) he was going to do there.  I get it...as fun and exciting as it is to hang out with your mom, nanny and baby sister all summer, sometimes you just want to get back to your friends and have some independence. I was just as excited for him.
Last night we laid our "First Day of School" outfit out for him to see and get used to, just so there might be one fewer temper tantrum in the morning.  Mac can be rather picky about his clothing - he insists on wearing "soft" clothes (hence so much Kickee...or maybe due to so much Kickee) and hates clothes with scratchy tags, collars, buttons, etc.  Even though he doesn't wear a uniform for preschool, I ordered him a few polo shirts and khaki shorts and pants from French Toast Uniforms that were actually incredibly soft and not-scratchy or uncomfortable.  French Toast has a great selection of colors of polo shirts for boys and I really love the soft blue and gray (plus, they're super affordable, so if your kid rolls in paint at school it's no problem).  The khaki shorts have an elastic waistband and are stretchy, comfortable and fit him really well without being stiff or tight.  I don't know if it was picking out the clothes the night before or whether he just also really liked the clothes, but there was absolutely NO RESISTANCE from him on getting dressed yesterday.  If you have a three-year old, you know what an accomplishment this is!  French Toast for the win.
As I mentioned in my last post, I printed this cute little sign for Mac to hold for his "First Day of Preschool" photo shoot and put it in his backpack with all these grand plans to prep him for getting his picture taken.  He was fine and totally on board until I pulled out the camera...at which time he decided he would rather throw himself down the stairs than look or smile at me.  The only way I convinced him to cooperate was to tell him that Baby Sting wanted to get his picture taken for his first day of school.  Somehow he bought it.  So, we had a nice little photo shoot for Baby Sting where we all talked about how much fun Baby Sting would have at school and how big and brave Baby Sting was.  We are all so lucky to have Baby Sting in our lives...  Mac seemed completely unphased by all of this.
Honestly, I think he was pretty excited for Baby Sting's first day of school, which is pretty adorable.  Baby Sting got to go to school in Mac's backpack and hang out there all day with him, just in case he was needed.  Turns out, Mac did just fine without Baby Sting (and without mommy).  He immediately found his little 3-year-old boy posse and they played cars and threw sand at each other in the sandbox like no time had passed at all.  When he found his way to me at the end of the day, there was no frantic "let's go home" vibe - just a cool, relaxed preschooler that had a lot of fun on his first day back and wanted to go play on the playground with all the other kids.  It simultaneously broke my heart and made me the proudest mama ever.
And speaking of mixed emotions, I'm not sure whether Mim is absolutely thrilled to shove Mac out the door three days a week so she can finally have some alone time to herself or if she's going to go into a deep state of depression every day until he gets home from school.  She's an enigma and went through a myriad of emotions yesterday in the 1.5 hours that he was gone.  Only time will tell.  (Although, it's very obvious that she thinks this photo shoot is the best idea ever and all about her...thank you sweet girl.)
How was your child's first day of school this year?

A Visit From the Backpack Fairy

Today is officially Mac's first day back at preschool!  If you ask him, he'll tell you that he's not excited...however, he's been talking about going back to school since the last day of school and he tells me all the time about who he wants to play with and what he's going to tell his teachers he did this summer. He's in three-day a week (half-day) preschool at a really great play-based preschool that we love. His teachers are absolutely amazing and he's really taken to some of the kids there.  We've been talking to him for a couple weeks about going back to school and all the fun stuff he's going to get to do when he's there, so I think he's going to handle it really well this year (fingers crossed, knock on wood).  But just to sweeten the deal, I thought it'd be fun if he was visited by the "Backpack Fairy" before his first day back and received some little goodies to help him get excited about school.  Here's what the Backpack Fairy brought him:
1. A new backpack
Duh.  Obviously this was a critical part of this whole scheme, so I wanted to make sure he got a backpack that would really excite him.  This one is Dusty, from Disney's Planes, which Mac is crazy about.  There's even a real 3D propeller on the front that spins.  Every 3-year old's dream come true, right?

2. Back-to-school books
I made sure the Backpack Fairy visited Mac two nights before school started (so he received the backpack the day before the first day of school).  That way I could make sure that the night before the first day we could read a few back-to-school books before bedtime.  I chose these three: Does a Panda Go To School?  Lenny Goes to Nursery School and Mouse's First Day of School.  Believe me, there is nothing spectacular about these books - if you have a preschooler, any book will probably do.  These just gave us the opportunity to talk about going back to school, his teachers, the routine, mommy leaving, etc.  There are so many back-to-school or first day of school books out there - here's a great list of back-to-school books by grade from Edventures with Kids.  We also already had The Kissing Hand and Llama Llama Misses Mama, so I read those too.
3. Back-to-school tags and labels*
Because of Mac's obsession with the Dusty the Plane backpack, I was slightly worried that perhaps every other 3-year old boy in school would have a Dusty backpack too, so I wanted to put a tag on his backpack so he knows it's his. Mabel's Labels makes these super cute metal keychain tags that you can personalize with your child's name, favorite things, colors, etc.  Mac chose a digger (surprise surprise) and we ordered the Ultimate Back-To-School Combo Pack of Mabel's Labels, which included 40 name stickers, 50 clothing labels, 16 shoe stickers and 2 mini metal tags (108 labels total).  These should last us quite a while (years?!) and will come in handy for all kind of things.
4. Annie's Homegrown Cheddar Bunnies*
Mac's school does snack time on a volunteer basis, where parents sign up for certain days and are responsible for taking a snack for the entire class.  However, sometimes snacks get overlooked or kids get sick on their snack day and the classroom ends up with no snack. Therefore, each semester the school asks that each child donate a snack that the class can have on hand, just in case. Our choice is Annie's Homegrown Cheddar Bunnies.  We are huge Cheddar Bunny fans (Mac is obsessed with them and Mim once ate an entire box for breakfast).  Plus, I've yet to meet a kid that doesn't like them, so we know they go over well at school.
5. First day of school photo prop
My child absolutely despises getting his photo taken these days.  I don't know if it's a 3-year old thing or because I stalk him with my camera nonstop and am always trying to get him to let me take his picture (oh, the perils of being the child of a blogger).  He doesn't handle it well.  But, being me (over-sharer extraordinaire), I knew that getting a good first day of school photo was important (to me, not him), so I included this framed printable to prep him for the mini photo shoot that would be happening the next day.  I think all kids do better with things they don't like when they are prepared for it and know that they will get rewarded (5 Skittles!) when it's over.  I used this adorable chalkboard printable from Yellow Bliss Road and in available in preschool through high school.
6. New pajamas
Call me crazy, but my kids get a new pair of pajamas for nearly every single occasion I can possibly think of. First day of school...new pajamas. First day of spring...new pajamas.  First Tuesday this month...new pajamas!!  Ok, so maybe this is all just another excuse to buy more Kickee Pants. Yes, it's an obsession.
7. First day of school interview
I thought it would be cute to start the tradition of doing an interview with the kids on their first day back to school.  I didn't want anything too deep, so this printable from Giggles Galore is perfect.  It has super cute prompts that I think will lead to some really adorable answers.  I'll make sure to let you all know what Mac says...I'm sure it'll be a hoot!

I like the idea of making the Backpack Fairy a tradition every year.  Here are some other ideas of what you could add to your child's backpack (for older kids):
  • chapstick
  • hair ties
  • stickers
  • personalized water bottle
  • washi tape
  • cookies/candy
  • watch
  • nail polish
  • markers
  • poem/jokes/card
  • lunch box
  • day planner
  • alarm clock
  • movie/DVD
  • flowers
  • clothing
  • gift certificates

Do you have any fun back-to-school traditions?

That One Time We Went to the Beach

Last week I mentioned that I still had not posted our Florida beach vacation photos from back in May, to which you all seemed to agree was not too late/stale/outdated to blog about and that you'd love to be bored out of your mind by a million photos of a vacation that you did not go on, nor do you care about.  You guys are the best!  This is mainly going to be a photo dump because I'm not going to waste any more of your precious time blabbing on and on about how lovely the beaches were, how insane my toddler was or how adorable the baby was.  I think you can tell all of that just by the  mere thousands of photos I'll post here (there are lots more with captions/descriptions on Instagram, if you're a glutton for punishment).  So, make sure your coffee cup's full and scroll on, good people.

Oh Florida, you are always so good to us.  See you next year...
