The Sleep Chronicles

Hi y'all!  Today I'm honored to be guest posting over at Being Mrs. Beer, as part of her Sleep Chronicles series.  If you remember, Mac was a TERRIBLE sleeper until not that long ago (like yesterday).  We have been struggling with sleep for over a year and it's...well, fucking exhausting!  As we were trying desperately to figure out what we should do to get him to sleep better, I loved hearing about what other mamas were doing and how their babies were handling it.  Even if our situations were completely different, I always felt like I learned something and might store away a tip or two for future issues/children.  I remember emailing one of my favorite bloggers, Julia, repeatedly when Mac and her daughter CeCe were going through similar sleep regressions around 10 months.  It is hard!  Unfortunately, every child is different and there's no one way to fix a kid's sleep issues (if only it were that easy).  I think the most important thing you can do is to try to understand your child and come up with a method that you, as a parent, are comfortable with.  Yes, the good ole "trust your instincts" advice - I'm sure you've never heard that before.
Anyway, other than that shining gem of wisdom, I don't really have any advice to pass on -- I'm far from an expert in this whole parenting gig, in case you haven't noticed -- I'm just telling our story.  And it's a good one (with a happy ending-ish) and will make you truly appreciate every second of sleep your child is currently giving you.  I hope you'll check it out - maybe leave a comment telling Jess what a great series this is and how beneficial it is for new mamas to hear other sleep struggles and suggestions.

And just because I'm curious...how's your baby sleeping these days?
Do you have one of those mythological babies that sleep through the night at 2 months old?
Do you have a toddler that's never slept through the night once?
Spill!

Baby Mac - 18 Months

Dear Baby Mac,

I take back every time I've said that it's the best age, because really, RIGHT NOW, 18 months, THIS is the BEST age EVER.  I mean it this time.  I don't know how it's possible, but you just keep getting more and more amazing.  Your dad and I fight over which one of us is your number 1 fan...it's a toss-up.  We are both absolutely crazy about you.  Seriously, it's bad....we need more hobbies or a couple more kids.  Well, at least you'll have something to talk to your therapist about in the future.
This has been such a fun month for all of us.  We have done so much and you've really turned into a little kid.  You are more and more independent and opinionated by the day.  I think the biggest development is your vocabulary.  You are such a jabberbox.  You never shut up.  I don't have a clue what you're saying about 75% of the time, but that sure doesn't stop you.  You are probably up to about 40-50 words right now, which is just outstanding.  You pick up a new word every day or two.  "Mama" is still my favorite.
You are really into books right now and we read 4-5 books before nap time and bedtime every day.  We just started reading Go Dogs, Go, which you love!  You pump your fist and yell GODOGS! like a champ.  You also still love the Little Blue Truck, Mommy Hugs, Moo Baa La La La and anything with trucks or farm animals.  We also sing together every night.  You now hum along, which is the sweetest sound I've ever heard.  You love singing Row Row Row Your Boat, which just means you repeat Row Row Row Row Row Row over and over.  I love it.   A coworker gave me an old keyboard to put in your playroom and you love playing the piano.  You also still love playing the guitar with your daddy and dancing in his lap.
Lately you're obsessed with keys.  You've always loved driving, but now you can manipulate a key and get it into the keyhole and turn the key.  It's pretty amazing.  You can take my giant key ring full of keys, pick out the one for the backdoor and get it in the keyhole.  The first time you did it I stood there in absolute shock.  How are you so smart?!  Any time you see a car (real or toy), you ask for the keys.  A lock with a key will entertain you for longer than anything else right now.  It won't be long before you're able to start the car and drive yourself to the grocery store!
You're also turning into such a great little helper.  You love to help me feed the dogs (which basically means dumping dog food all over the floor), feed the fish (dumping way too much food into the tank), water the plants (drown them and soak the carpet), make breakfast (get pancake batter everywhere), throw away the trash (throw everything that's not trash also in the trash), put away laundry (by dumping the basket of clothes on the floor) and sweep (push dog hair around with a broom).
Little dude, you're still a great eater, most days.  You are getting better at eating (sitting still) in restaurants, but we've still got a long way to go.  I'm excited for you to have Thanksgiving dinner this year, especially after you loved it so much last year.  Your favorite foods are still pasta, chicken burgers, spinach/kale bites, macaroni & cheese, rotisserie chicken, pretzels, raspberries, bananas, scrambled eggs and anything sweet.  I love giving you breakfast in the morning and watching you devour your food!  We sing the "jelly toast song" and dance around the kitchen.  You can eat more pancakes than I can.
Speaking of mornings, you have been sleeping in until about 7:30 a.m. most mornings, which is AWESOME.  Please keep that up.  You are so happy to see me when I walk into your room and you tell me that you're "ALL DONE" sleeping.  You then insist on brushing your teeth with me in our bathroom with your dad's toothbrush and real toothpaste (only a teeny tiny bit).  We both brush, while you hold puppy and I hold you.  You also like to help me brush my teeth by jamming the toothbrush in my mouth and wiping it across my face.  You think this is hilarious (I can't count the number of times I've gone to work with toothpaste in my hair or on my face).  We both spit and rinse together.  Sometimes puppy gets his teeth brushed too.
We've also been really active this past month.  You and I went to Florida to visit friends, just the two of us and had the most amazing weekend at the beach.  Then we all went to Chicago the following weekend to visit your uncle, aunt and cousin for Uncle Justin's birthday.  You were such a great little travel companion and slept on 3 of the 4 flights.  You adjusted well to the time difference (and the time change) like a pro!  You took great naps and slept through the night, every night except one.  You were also really great at sharing toys and things with your friends.  No major meltdowns over toys either weekend.  I call that major success!
This whole being a parent thing just keeps getting better and better.  Thank you for being such an awesome, fun kid.  You really are the greatest thing I've ever done.
Love,
Your mama

This Is Me Not Talking About It

I wasn't going to mention it.  I wasn't going to blog about it.  I don't want to talk about it.  I don't even want to think about it.  So why am I here writing this post on something that hurts so much?  I guess, because it happened.  And as much as I'm trying to ignore the date and just be thankful for all I have, the baby that should have been arriving this week deserves at least a mention.

The thing is, I'm still heartbroken, you guys.  I'm still hurting so much.  I can't help but to constantly dream of "what should have been."  She/he should be here.  Mac should be a big brother.  I should be starting maternity leave with an armful of newborn goodness and a healthy fear of never sleeping again for the rest of my life.  Our home and hearts should be full for the holidays.  Instead, I'm left with a slightly empty feeling.  My belly is empty (other than coffee and Kit-Kats, the breakfast of champions) and my heart is aching.  I still feel so broken.

Every day I give thanks for the perfect, happy, wonderful little boy that made me a mother and I pray for patience and the ability to trust in a plan for our family that is so different right now than the one I want.  I ask for strength to keep trying, despite my body's refusal to cooperate.  I ask for humility and perspective.  I ask for peace, for my heart to be satisfied with all the blessings I've been given.  I ask for graciousness, the ability to be happy for those around me who are expanding their families, even if I'm not.  I pray for the little one that should have been celebrating a birthday this week.  I pray for our loss.  I pray for our family.  I pray for our future.

Park Play Pics

A few weeks ago, my friend Jessica asked me if she could "practice" taking some photos of me and Mac at a local park, so she could work on camera settings, angles and composure.  Jessica and I both got our "fancy cameras" around the same time and she's been really great about letting me practice on her kiddos (remember this and this), so of course, my answer was "hell-to-the-yes!"  Jessica is a lawyer, turned scientist, turned mama-extraordinaire, and is one of those people that's amazing at everything she does, so I had no doubt her photos would be great.  However, they are so incredible, they absolutely blew me away!  I started crying the minute I saw the first sneak peek.  As the photographer in her family too, she understands how important and special it is to have photos of you with your children, laughing, playing and just being silly.  I'm hoping she'll "go pro" soon, so I can hire her to do all our family photos for the rest of our lives. Mac and I had the best morning running around our favorite park, chasing the ducks, swinging and sliding - Jess managed to capture some really beautiful moments that I will treasure forever.  Thank you Jessica for spending a little time with me and the boy and for these GORGEOUS photos.  We love you.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Toes in the Sand

“The voice of the sea speaks to the soul.”

― Kate ChopinThe Awakening

Mac and I had the most amazing trip to Naples last weekend.  It was one of those epic weekend getaways that absolutely recharges your soul and you come home feeling amazing and blessed and happy.  A big thank you to everyone that sent us good "travel vibes" because Mac was perfection on both flights.  He also slept through the night (all three nights), ate well, played well, loved the beach, loved his new friend and napped like a champ.  I mean, who is this kid?!  He was slightly clingy to mama, but overall he was such a great travel buddy and it was so nice spending a whole weekend having fun with him.  Just as awesome, was being able to catch up with a very good friend from law school and her daughter.  Without going into any details out of respect to her privacy, I will just say that she's been through a lot the last couple years and is one of the bravest, toughest, strongest, smartest, most amazing women and moms I know and I am so honored to call her a friend.  They showed us the best time and spoiled us rotten with stone crab and beach picnics and golf cart rides and waterfront sunsets.  Thank you E&C for the absolute best weekend getaway ever.

5 on Friday - Volume 7

Here are some photos of Mac's official Halloween costume!  He's a Mac Truck!  I think it turned out pretty well, but apparently he wasn't a fan.  He was actually pretty freaked out the entire night with all the kids coming and going, the crazy costumes, the dogs barking their faces off and the massive sugar crash after helping himself to the candy bowl.  I can't really say I blame him...Halloween must be weird and terrifying for toddlers.  We didn't even leave the house because it was raining so hard and I'm pretty sure the cardboard costume wouldn't hold up in a downpour (and I need it to because we are definitely going to have to retake some photos of him in it to get a smiley one).  Also, did you notice he got a haircut?!  (full post with eight million photos coming soon)  He no longer looks like a baby.  WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BABY?

As you read this, Mac and I are on our way to the beach!  It's the opening weekend of duck season, so while Ryan's out slaughtering birds, Mac and I are heading down to sunny Florida to visit one of my good friends and her daughter.  We are SO excited about the trip.  I've got a giant carry-on bag stocked plum full of candy, toys and activities to keep Mac entertained on the flight.  I'm SO nervous.  Please send positive solo-parent-toddler-travel vibes my way.

I took over 1,600 photos (almost all of Mac) in the month of October.  That's normal, right?  It's going to take me five years to get through them all.

I've started my list wish for Santa.  This year I'll be asking for liposuction and an "Undo Last Move" button on Candy Crush.  That's all.  Oh, and maybe a baby.

My freezer is stocked full of mini Kit-Kat bars.  Like 2 whole giant bags of them just waiting for me.  Santa really better come through on that lipo.
